What are some of the benefits of liposuction?

Liposuction is a popular and effective method for removing unwanted fat from targeted areas of the body. It can help provide more contours and a slimmer appearance. There are several different types of liposuction, each of which has specific advantages.

  • Tumescent liposuction involves injecting saline solution into the treatment area to break up fatty deposits and make it easier for them to be drawn out through suction.
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) uses ultrasound waves to break up the fat before being removed via suction.
  • Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) heats nearby tissue using laser light, which causes fatty cells to liquefy, allowing them to be vacuumed out.
  • Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) uses an oscillating knife-like tool that cuts through tissue before fat is removed via suction.
  • All methods are safe and effective when performed by an experienced board-certified doctor in a medical setting.

What areas can be treated with liposuction?

Liposuction offers many advantages as a cosmetic procedure and can effectively contour various areas of the body. Specifically, some of the areas that benefit from liposuction treatments include:

  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Bra fat or “bra bulge”
  • Arms
  • Male chest
  • Mid and upper back
  • Upper back fat hump ("buffalo hump")
  • Chin and jawline
  • Hips and waist
  • Abdomen and flanks
  • Calves/ankles ("cankles")
  • Neck and cheeks

Liposuction can also be used for difficult-to-tone areas like arms that are resistant to regular exercise. Liposuction is an excellent option for those that want to achieve a permanent change in the contours of specific areas of their body.

What is the recovery from liposuction?

Depending on your procedure, full recovery can take up to 3 months. The initial days and weeks following the procedure are essential in ensuring a fast recovery; making sure that swelling is reduced is of utmost importance during this time frame. During the first 72 hours, it is key to use compression garments to speed up the drainage of anesthetic fluid and minimize pain, swelling, and bruising. Most are able to return to work within 5-7 days post-surgery, and physical activities such as exercise can be resumed after 4-6 weeks.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you:

  • Are within 30% of your ideal weight
  • Have good skin tone
  • Are healthy and do not have a life-threatening illness or medical condition
  • Are a nonsmoker
  • Have a positive outlook and realistic goals set for your liposuction procedure

What should I not do after liposuction?

After a liposuction procedure, it is important to exercise caution while resuming activities. Light exercise, such as walking, can be done 24 hours after the surgery, but more strenuous activities should be deferred. It is also safe to drive and engage in household activities like cleaning and desk work, but without overexertion. Additionally, showering can be done 24 hours post-surgery. However, you should keep in mind that even if you don’t feel any pain or discomfort, it’s always important to wait for a period before engaging in regular activities again to ensure that your body has fully healed from the procedure.
