Surgery can be especially beneficial for reducing both the physical and psychological effects of misshapen or overly large ears, an attribute that may lead to teasing or bullying. Restoring symmetry and balance to the ears can give the patient improved self-confidence, elevating quality of life.

What is ear surgery?

Otoplasty is a safe and effective surgical procedure designed to improve the shape, size, and position of the ears. It involves reshaping the cartilage and structure of the ear to establish a natural balance with other facial features.

Am I a candidate for ear surgery?

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is a common cosmetic procedure that can benefit people of all ages. A good candidate for ear surgery typically has issues with the size or shape of their ears – from overly large ears to ears that are asymmetrical or protrude too much.

  • Adults who want to correct an issue with their ears due to genetics may find this procedure beneficial.
  • Children can also benefit in many cases; if a child's ears stick out too far, they may be prone to self-esteem issues. With otoplasty, these effects can be significantly reduced, and quality of life improved.

What is the procedure for otoplasty/ ear surgery?

During otoplasty, an incision will be made in the skin behind the ear, and cartilage and skin may be removed. Certain stitching techniques may also be used to fold and reshape the cartilage. Depending on the specifics of your case, our surgeon may use general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation during the procedure.

What is the recovery for otoplasty?

After otoplasty, you can expect some mild discomfort that should resolve within 4-7 days. You may have dressings placed on your ears that will be removed roughly one week after your procedure. Most people will experience enough healing within two weeks to return to normal activity. However, contact sports are typically not recommended for several weeks following surgery.
